How ZEISS lenses can make driving less stressful and safer.
Many people feel insecure, uncomfortable and stressed when driving, especially in difficult light and weather conditions such as rain and mist, or at dusk or night.
On average 83% of spectacle lens wearers* also drive. Driving can be a real challenge for everybody – no matter how long the distance, and good vision is vital for safety.
With ZEISS DriveSafe Lenses, ZEISS have introduced a new lens product category for everyday use. It is specifically designed to meet the vision needs of people who want to feel safer and more comfortable when driving with their everyday lenses.
Just how important is good vision for driving? When can vision problems occur?
ZEISS DriveSafe Lenses tackle 3 main challenges:
The pupil reacts to light intensity from its surroundings, specifically the light that directly strikes the eye. In daylight conditions, the pupil diameter is small, whereas it is large at night. In low light, so-called mesopic conditions, i.e. twilight, rainfall, dark days or night driving, the pupil diameter is in-between small and large. Space perception, as well as distance assessment, becomes more difficult for the driver.

Driving demands a high level of concentration from drivers. Most of the time they need a broad view of the road in order to evaluate traffic conditions. The situation becomes challenging, especially for progressive lens wearers, when they need to switch their focus between the road, dashboard and mirrors. That is when dynamic vision becomes essential. In an eye tracking study with FKFS* we identified the vision field needs of drivers: 97% of the recorded time they watch the road. 2% of the recorded time they use to look at the dashboard. 1% of the recorded time they switch focus between mirrors.

Glare describes the difficulty of seeing in bright light, such as direct sunlight or artificial light. Especially when driving at night, the high luminance from car headlights with Xenon or LED technology is distracting. Glare can be a risk, as it reduces the visibility of objects and sensitivity of the eye to contrast. ZEISS vision science researchers carried out glare experiments. These formed the basis of internal studies* using different coating simulations. The blue light spectrum of car headlights (in particular in the 400–450 nm range) using Xenon H.I.D. (High Intensity Discharge) or LED technology produces a glare effect perceived by drivers.

ZEISS DriveSafe Lenses feature an optimised spectacle lens design that takes into account the size of our pupils in poor light. There is one design for single vision lenses, and one for progressives. The result: more relaxed and better vision when driving in poor light.

Large depth of focus, relaxed space perception
In DriveSafe, ZEISS has used a special new coating to take into account the many different situations during driving when our eyes are confronted with glare. This offers the same hardness and cleaning properties as DuraVision® Premium coatings, but features a different kind of anti-reflective coating. The DuraVision DriveSafe coating has been specially developed to reflect certain wavelengths between 400 and 450 nm which are part of the blue light spectrum and are emitted in particular by xenon and LED light sources.

ZEISS offers a special design to make driving with progressive lenses more comfortable and safer. The optimised vision zones make it easier for the eyes to refocus when moving between the road ahead and the dashboard and the rear view or side mirrors. Horizontal movements of the head are reduced. At the same time, the near zone is designed so that your spectacles can be worn all day long – also for reading.
